Housing 1000 in Action: Maria’s Story
For Maria, hurting her back while at work was the start of a hard downward spiral. While she was able to go on disability temporarily, she was soon laid off and had to start dipping into her savings to pay for her daily expenses. When she was no longer able to afford the rent of her one-bedroom apartment, she starting renting a room from a friend while looking for her next job. Unfortunately, not long after she moved in, her friend was forced to sell her home and Maria again needed to find another place to live. After bouncing around for a few weeks, another friend offered to let her sleep in the corner of his living room.
“It was so tough because I didn’t have any space of my own,” said Maria. “I couldn’t shower, I couldn’t cook – I felt like I was just stuck in a little corner of the living room because I was just grateful not to be living in my car.”
However, Maria was resilient and knew she could get back on her feet. She brushed up her resume, started applying for jobs and after an interview with Walmart, got hired on the spot. She was able to start saving up her money and knew that with a little help, she would be able to find a place for her and her dogs to call home – and that’s when she found Interfaith. With the assistance of a housing case manager, Maria was able to find a studio that accepted pets and was available immediately.
“I really don’t think I would’ve been able to find a place without Interfaith,” said Maria.
Because she had only been working for a month or so, Interfaith was able to help Maria not only with her security deposit, but also by paying a portion of her first three months of rent. After moving in to her own home, Maria finally feels like her life is falling back into place.
“Having my own home now is a total relief,” said Maria. “Without Interfaith, I don’t know where I would be.”
