TYA students accept full-ride college scholarships
Interfaith Community Services was proud to attend an event at Oceanside High School as two Transitional Youth Academy (TYA) students signed their letters of intent for full-ride college athletic scholarships.
Oceanside seniors Joshua Bernard and Amadeo West will attend Weber State University and United States Military Academy at West Point, respectively, in the fall 2015 semester. West, Oceanside’s leading defensive end, will be joining a fellow TYA alumni Jordan, both in the classroom and on the field at West Point. Bernard, Oceanside’s leading rusher, has committed to Weber State. These students have overcome significant odds to achieve success both on the football field and in the classroom through the support of Interfaith’s TYA program.
Operating on campus at both Oceanside High School and El Camino High School, TYA currently serves 200 students by blending academic support with comprehensive mentoring, leadership development and employment training. The TYA program maintains an impressive success rate in supporting vulnerable students in achieving their academic and career aspirations. Last year, 100% of students improved their attendance rates and increased their GPA. Most significantly, 100% of TYA seniors successfully graduated high school and 90% went on to enroll in college.
