Volunteers Celebrated at Thank You BBQ

005Interfaith celebrated its volunteers, interns and community supporters at the first Volunteer Thank You BBQ on May 24th at the newly renovated Family Housing Program Aster Street garden. Nearly one hundred guests were encouraged to sit back, relax, enjoy dinner and live music, and be appreciated for all they do for our community. Seated at picnic-style tables scattered throughout the garden, volunteers helped themselves to hot dogs off the grill and a variety of barbecue options from local restaurant Brett’s Barbecue. Accompanied by the musical talents of the Pizarro Brother’s, guests mingled with each other, staff and participants in Interfaith’s Family Housing Program, who call the apartment buildings surrounding the garden home.

During a brief program, Interfaith Executive Director Greg Anglea welcomed volunteers and stressed how he could not thank them enough for all they do for the organization. “At a time when the world is so polarized,” said Board Member and long-time volunteer Christine Weigel-Schwan later in the program, “I’m just so proud to serve at an organization that brings people of all faiths together with the common mission of helping people.” Christine then introduced Jesse, a former client of Interfaith’s who today, volunteers as the gardener for the Aster Street property – even building a horse shoe pit for residents to use.

“My friends ask me if Interfaith pays me for all the work I do here,” said Jesse. “But I tell them that Interfaith has already given me so much. I have a debt for all I’ve been given, where I’ve come from and where I am now.”

Interfaith thanks all of the volunteers who contribute to our organization daily, weekly and monthly. Without their support, we would not be able to impact as many lives in our community as we are able to year after year.

“Every time you come to Interfaith to volunteer, you do so with an open heart and that makes this organization a place of beauty,” said Micki Hickox, Volunteer Coordinator.

We hope that all guests enjoyed our first Volunteer Thank You BBQ and look forward to celebrating them again in the near future!
